Failure is a part of success, especially for women

Failure is a part of success, especially for womenFailure is a part of success, especially for womenIf youve never failed at something, how do you know when youre succeeding? For women that question is harder to answer because theyre less likely to allow themselves to fail, according to a recent article byU.S. News World Reportcalled, To Succeed, Women Must Learn to FailForward.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moreResearch has shown that women are judged more harshly for their mistakes than men and may respond by being more risk-averse, writes Linda Kramer Jenning, the author of the article. As a result, some women may bedrngnis seize leadership opportunities and that worries those committed to achieving gender equity. The thing is, when you dont fail, you dont allow yourself to become stronger in that process, resulting in more resilience - which is a key part of being a successful leader, accordingto a 2018 study on nurse managers published in the U.S. National Library of Medicine. But the stakes are so much higher for women to begin with, as just 6.4 percent of Fortune 500 companies are led by women - a number that is actually on the decline, per the Pew Research Centers 2017 datareport.Still, the benefits of failure go beyond resilience. For women, especially, being open about failure makes leaders more relatable and therefore effective. People appreciate that youre not perfect all the time, Jessica Grounds, co-founder ofMine the Gap, a firm that works with companies to close their gender gaps, told U.S. News. Grounds suggests that women build a trusted team in and out of the workplace who will give constructive criticism and coach them through a failure. That sentiment that failure is a powerful aspect of success has been echoed by handfuls of female leaders. Thumbs Up for the Hitchhiker Robot

Thumbs Up for the Hitchhiker Robot Thumbs Up for the Hitchhiker Robot Thumbs Up for the Hitchhiker RobotIts not as common as it once welches, but occasionally youll see a hitchhiker on the road, thumb out, hoping to trade slow goings for wheels. But if a driver encountered the traveler in this story, the experience would be somewhat different. The hitchBOT was just what it sounded like, a robot hoping to find miles of road, in many passengers seats, with many different drivers.Working with new media technologies, we were interested in an unusual situation for a social robot, says David Harris Smith, assistant professor in the department of communication studies and multimedia at McMaster University. We thought it was important to have linguistic and speech recognition and we liked the idea of setting a robot loose in an unsupervised setting. That was the beginning, that you could create something that was somewhat autonomous. There was a period of time that we had this idea and then h ad this eureka moment Lets set a robot hitchhiking. The face of the robot was a four-sided LED system and it had animated graphics that ran off of an Arduino that changes the graphics. The hitchBOT also had a GPS unit to track itself and post information to databases, along with voice recognition and Lithium batteries providing about seven or eight hours running time. The hitchBOT catches a ride in Germany. Image Ryerson UniversityUnable to walk or move, how did it lift its arm to hitch? A servo motor. We also had flexible solar panels, which were not sufficient to recharge, but actually could keep the face illuminated and they would also slow down the battery drain and extend battery life, says Smith.According to Frauke Zeller, assistant professor at Ryerson University We thought about what kind of personality the robot should have and what they should talk about. We went for having a fun robot that wants to explore the world and thought what would humans ask? We abfluged to define its personality and wrote dialogues. We even taught the robot a few jokes. The dialogue modeling was done with a program called Cleverscript and they could write their own customized dialogue anticipating conversation types. We also were able to use the GPS to classify by area, Smith says. It could retrieve information about that province or city and it could help add contextual awareness into conversation. To start the very first trip, hitchBOT was driven to Halifax and dropped off at the Trans-Canada Highway. We stepped back and in two minutes hitchBOT started off on a camping trip, Smith says.Zeller said hitchBOT became a magnet for people, heavily followed through social media. Traveling in 2014 and 2015, hitchBOT was invited to the Netherlands, by an artist to promote art in the region, and Germany, to be accompanied by a television team as part of documentary (hitchBOT didnt hitchhike to get to these destinations). Sadly, hitchBOT finally met its end in Philadelphia, where it w as vandalized and destroyed. We never found out who did it and why they did it, Zeller says. We were surprised by then because it had been out in the public so long. But what was also surprising in a good way was all the support we received from social media. We didnt know thousands of people would post how sad they were, but they did.Eric Butterman is an independent writer. We were surprised by the vandalism by then because it had been out in the public so long. But what was also surprising in a good way was all the support we received from social media.Prof. Frauke Zeller, Ryerson University

Heavy Lifting The History of the Elevator Code

Heavy Lifting The History of the Elevator Code Heavy Lifting The History of the Elevator Code The use of cranes and other types of mechanical lifting equipment grew in step with the growth in freight railroading and shipping at the beginning of the twentieth century. Guidelines for the safe design and operation of cranes were not yet in place, and the high incidence of injuries to dockworkers, railroad yardmen, and factory workers was of concern to a variety of organizations, including the Locomotive Crane Manufacturers Association and the Association of Iron and Steel Electrical Engineers, as well as to the U.S. Department of the Navy, and other government agencies, including the U.S. Department of Labor, which was formed in 1913. By 1920, these groups were pressing hard for worker protection and safety. ASME was a key player in the discussion. The society formed the ASME Safety Code Correlating Committee to expand on an eight-page document, Code of Safety Standards for Cranes, developed in 1916. ASME also helped coordinate the input of 29 national organizations with a vested interest in crane safety. The effort led to Safety Code for Cranes, Derricks, and Hoists, ASA B30.2, which gained national acceptance in 1943. B30 evolved into a series of volumes addressing the various types of equipment within the committees scope, and would grow through the ensuing decades as one of the societys most important activities. While the ASME Safety Code Correlating Committee was at work on crane safety in the years following World War I, a building boom was under way in Americas urban centers. As buildings became taller, the need for a device to move people and material goods to upper floors became apparent. Elevators already had been in service for several years, but the public was not entirely convinced of their safety. Although Elijah Otis invented a safety brake in 1853, which prevented the fall of the elevator platform in the event that its hoisting rope broke, the public generally feared elevators and were keenly aware of the need for safety. As with boilers and cranes before ASME addressed them, little regulation and few design and operating guidelines existed to ensure safety in elevators. Code writing for elevators initially fell to the Elevator Manufacturers Association, then shifted to ASME in the post-war period. In 1921, ASME issued A17, Safety Code for Elevators, containing safety provisions for switches, door locking mechanisms, and speed. A17, Safety Code for Elevators was a 25-page publication. Todays ASME A17.1/CSA B44, Safety Code for Elevators and Escalators is a binational code, jointly developed by ASME and the Canadian Standards Association, contains more than 350 pages, and includes rules and guidelines for technologies that were not around ninety years ago, like relay control equipment and solid state computerized components. A key milestone in the development of the code occurred in 2007, when ASME, jointly with the Canadian Standards Association, published the first performance-based safety code, ASME A17.7/CSA B44.7. [Adapted from To Protect and Serve, by John Varrasi, ASME Public Information, for Mechanical Engineering, July 2009.]As with boilers and cranes before ASME addressed them, little regulation and few design and operating guidelines existed to ensure safety in elevators.

4 Tips for the Passive Job Seeker

4 Tips for the Passive Job Seeker 4 Tips for the Passive Job Seeker Unemployed people or workers who really want to get out of their current position throw themselves wholeheartedly into finding a new role. But plenty of other folks take a less aggressive approach to the job market. They keep an eye on what’s out there and perhaps nibble at exceptional opportunities, but they don’t conduct a full-fledged search. If you fall into this latter category, however, be careful not to equate passivity with total inactivity. Actions taken now can pay off significantly later. Four tips for passive job seekers to keep in mind: 1. Maintain a current resume. If opportunity knocks, are you ready to answer? All professionals should have an up-to-date, polished resume in their arsenal that can be tweaked easily to match the specifics of the job ad. “You should be ready to fire off a quality resume with just a few customizing edits,” says Duncan Mathison, co-author of Unlock the Hidden Job Market: 6 Steps to a Successful Job Search When Times Are Tough. “Last minute scrambles to throw together a resume run the risk of presenting yourself poorly to a great opportunity and organization. First impressions last a long time.” 2. Pay attention to your network. Similarly, stay in regular contact with individuals you might want to use as references down the line. Asking someone you routinely converse with for help feels much less awkward than connecting only when you need a favor. And don’t skimp on meeting new people. Sure, checking out career boards is an easy way to passively hunt, but relationships hold a world of potential. People you enjoy the professional company of today may keep you top of mind for positions that open up on their team at a later date. All workers want to be around colleagues they like! 3. Examine trends and develop skills. When you’re looking at what jobs are out there in your industry, pay attention to skills, educational requirements, and other in-demand factors. Obtaining knowledge about what perspective employers want most before conducting a full-on job search allows time to increase future marketability, such as by pursuing a certification. Staying abreast of what’s going on in your field also may be useful to your current position. Knowing how your salary and responsibilities compare to those in similar roles can come in handy during promotion discussions. Or you might be able to convince your employer to foot the bill for a class on a tech skill that’s gaining popularity in your industry. 4. Analyze what you want. Finally, while many passive job seekers really are only curious about what’s out there, others look because of some desire for change. Figuring out where you stand can assist in averting impulsivity and shaping your future. “Know what it will take to make a move,” Mathison says. “A simple exercise is to do a list of your likes and dislikes of past and current jobs. You will soon start to see a pattern of needing ‘more of this and less of that’ in your career. This will provide a solid foundation for evaluating any opportunity whether the result is avoiding a rash decision or giving you the courage to make a change.” BROWSE OPEN FLEXIBLE JOBS

The boss we hate the most is the one who ignores us

The boss we hate the most is the one who ignores us The boss we hate the most is the one who ignores us Unfortunately for employees, bad bosses come in all kinds of flavors. There are the tyrannical bullies, the selfish, the sociopaths, the ones who can never admit being wrong. But out of all the toxic bosses, the ones who make us feel the worst are the ones who ignore us.Research highlighted by Harvard Business Review has found that absentee leadership is the most common incompetent leader and the most derailing to our self-esteem.“Laissez-faire leadership behavior”  can be destructiveAbsentee leaders are ones that may be physically in the office, but their mind is elsewhere. They may be called leaders but they do not act like ones, avoiding the task of building meaningful connections with their team. They lack the self-awareness to keep track of company changes and their employees’ professional growth. They are not honest about your job performance, preferring to give empty praise. “We are doing fine,” their empty platitudes say, while everything is certainly not fine.Worst , you prompt them to take actions about serious management issues and they never do anything. Their hands are completely off the wheel and you are left to steer this skidding company on your own.In its analysis of the absentee boss, Harvard Business Review cited a 2010 study  which found that “laissez-faire leadership behavior” was the most common destructive leader employees face. An absentee boss is characterized by what they do not do. It is a hands-off approach to leadership where complaints do not get addressed, and achievements do not get recognized.Being ignored feels worse than bullyingWhen our bosses give us complete free reign, it may seem freeing at first, but soon it feels alienating to have no clear direction about what you should be doing. Is anyone even listening to us? A 2015 survey found that laissez-faire leadership turned out to be the sole predictor of job satisfaction for employees.Employees in the survey felt worse when they were ignored than when they were bullied. In fact, the impact of an absentee boss will leave lasting marks on us long after the initial interaction. Employees with absentee bosses reported a degraded job satisfaction for at least two years. So bosses everywhere, pay attention. When you get promoted to a management position, the most important action you can take to improve job satisfaction is to make sure every employee feels heard.

Learn the ABCs of ASVAB AFQT Scores

Learn the ABCs of ASVAB AFQT Scores Learn the ABCs of ASVAB AFQT Scores The Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) is a series of tests that everyone who enlists in the U.S. military has to take. It allows the military to determine what job an enlisted person is suited for. The Armed Services Qualification Test (AFQT) score is derived from four of the nine subtests of the ASVAB: Paragraph Comprehension (PC), Word Knowledge (WK), Mathematics Knowlege (MK), and Arithmetic Reasoning (AR).   History of the ASVAB When Congress passed the Selective Service Act in 1948, it required the Department of Defense to develop a uniform screening test to be used by all of the services. This was the first iteration of the AFQT, 100 multiple choice questions, with each branch of the service setting its own standards for minimum required scores.   The DoD refined the test, standardizing it across all the branches during the 1960s. The ASVAB was officially introduced in 1976 as the test used across the U.S. military.   Why the AFQT Is Important The present-day AFQT score is the most important  ASVAB score,  because it determines whether you can join the military service of your choice. Each of the services branches has set its own  minimum AFQT scores. The AFQT score is a percentile score. What does that mean? In 1997, a study  known as the Profile of American Youth was conducted by the Department of Defense in cooperation with the Department of Labor. DOD administered the ASVAB to around 12,000 individuals, ranging in age from 16 to 23. Your AFQT score is a comparison of how well you scored on the four subtests, compared to those who took the ASVAB as part of the 1997 survey. In other words, if you have an AFQT score of 70, that means you scored as well or better than 70 percent of those 12,000 folks. AFQT Categories The military divides AFQT scores into the following categories. The lower your category number, the more attractive candidate you are to the military for enlistment: Category I - 93-99Category II - 65-92Category IIIA - 50-64Category IIIB - 31-49Category IVA - 21-30Category IVB - 16-20Category IVC - 10-15Category V - 0-9 In the early 1990s, Congress passed a law stating that no Category V recruits could be accepted for enlistment in any of the military services, and no more than 20 percent of accessions could be in Category IV. Additionally, Congress required that any Category IV accessions had to be high school diploma graduates (no GEDs). However, the military services have even stricter standards for enlistment. Computing an AFQT Score To compute your AFQT score, the military takes your Verbal Expression (VE) score  and doubles it. They then add it to your Mathematics Knowledge (MK) and Arithmetic Reasoning (AR) raw scores. The Formula is 2VEMKAR. The then compare the result to a table to derive your AFQT percentile score. Note that a raw score is not the same as the standard scores you see on your ASVAB score sheet. On the ASVAB, harder questions are worth more points than easier questions. The raw score is the total number of points you earned on that particular ASVAB subtest. You wont know what your raw score is  because the military doesnt include that information on the ASVAB score sheet. 2VE+MK+AR AFQT Percentile 2VE+MK+AR AFQT Percentile 80-120 1 204 50 121-124 2 205 51 125-127 3 206 52 128-131 4 207-208 53 132-134 5 209 54 135-137 6 210 55 138-139 7 211 56 140-142 8 212 57 143-144 9 213 58 145-146 10 214 59 147-148 11 215 61 149-150 12 216 62 151-153 13 217 63 154 14 218 64 155-156 15 219 65 157-158 16 220 66 159-160 17 221 67 161-162 18 222 68 163-164 19 223 69 165 20 224 70 166-167 21 225 71 168-169 22 226 72 170-171 23 227 73 172 24 228 74 173-174 25 229 75 175 26 230 76 176-177 27 231 77 178 28 232 78 179-180 29 233 79 181 30 234 80 182 31 235 81 183-184 32 236 82 185 33 237 83 186 34 238-239 84 187-188 35 240 85 189 36 241 86 190 37 242 87 191 38 243 88 192 39 244 89 193 40 245 90 194 41 246 91 195-196 42 247 92 197 43 248 93 198 44 249 94 199 45 250 95 200 46 251 96 201 47 252 97 202 48 253 98 203 49 254-320 99

Contract Addendum FAQ - United States

Contract Addendum FAQ - United States Contract Addendum FAQ - United States What is the governing law of my Contract Addendum? The governing law will usually be the jurisdiction in which the property is located, depending upon the property involved. Depending upon the contract, the parties may choose one of the jurisdictions the parties reside in. How many times can I amend a contract using an Contract Addendum? There is no limit in law to the number of times a contract can be amended. However, our contract allows you to make amendments to a contract on 5 separate occasions which should deal with almost all potential situations. If additional amendments are needed after the fifth amendment, then an entirely new contract should be executed. How many amendments can I make to the contract within a single Contract Addendum? Our contract allows you to make up to 5 changes to existing terms of the contract. If you have more than 5 amendments to make, you should create a new contract rather than amending the existing one. Can I add completely new clauses to the contract?Yes, you can use the Additional Terms section of the questions page to create new contractual terms that were not contained in the contract originally. If the parties execute an Contract Addendum, do the terms of the original contract still apply?Yes, all of the original contractual terms still apply, except to the extent that they have been amended by the Contract Addendum. Can I amend a contract such as a lease without the other party's consent? No, a legal contract between two or more parties cannot be altered unilaterally. Our Contract Addendum contains spaces for the parties to the original contract to acknowledge their consent to the amendment by signing their names. I selected Corporation/Organization for one of the Parties. The signing area now displays (seal). What does this mean? The corporate seal is used to authenticate corporate documents. The device to create the seal is a stamp that will emboss paper. The signing officer for your corporation would usually have authority over your corporate seal. I do not know when the Contract Addendum will be signed. Can I fill in the date later?Yes, by selecting 'Unsure' as the date the agreement will be signed, a blank line will be inserted into the contract so that you can add the correct date after printing the document.

5 Outdated Pieces of Career Advice - FlexJobs

5 Outdated Pieces of Career Advice - FlexJobs 5 Outdated Pieces of Career Advice - career counselor with wisdom to share. And while some of the unsought advice we receive is actually quite useful, some of it can be less than useful, and even outdated. Check out these five outdated pieces of career advice: From an article about this very subject, we invite you to “ignore these outdated pieces of career advice.” “Your resume can only be one page.” Unless you are fresh out of college or have very limited experience, two page resumes are A-okay nowadays. “Every job has to go on your resume to present a complete account of your professional history.” Unless your job search goal is to bore recruiters and better your chances for rejection, don’t put every job you’ve ever had on your resume. Break it up into sections like Relevant and Additional Work Experience, and use only the most related experience you have. “When your interviewer asks about your weaknesses, offer up a positive framed as a weakness.” Using a strength as a weakness is just silly. Recruiters want you to be honest and tell them an area that you know you need to improve in. The key is to choose a weakness that is fairly easily overcome, and to stress that you have identified this as a weakness because you want to improve upon it. “Your resume and cover letter should be written in formal language.” While we don’t recommend writing your resume and cover letter as though they are quick Facebook messages to close friends, it’s okay to drop the uber-formal language for something more conversational. Let your personality shine through and skip the template-style letter for something from your heart. Tell them why you’re passionate about the job and what you’ve done to merit being hired. “Include an objective at the top of your resume.” This one is even a little bit hard for me to let go, only because in my days as a college career advisor many moons ago, I often recommended objectives on resumes for my students. But times change and so do job search norms, and a much more effective section on your resume is a Summary of Qualifications, which should be tailored for every job to which you apply. For five other pieces of outdated career advice, check out U.S. News World Report.

Do You Need a Recruiter or an Agent

Do You Need a Recruiter or an Agent Do You Need a Recruiter or an Agent There are too many names to keep track of: recruiter, agent, headhunter, executive recruiter, search consultant. Which is which? And most importantly, which is right for your job-search campaign?Do you expect your recruiter to be your agent? If so, you have confused an executive recruiter and an executive agent. There is an unmistakable distinction: The two professions are paid by, loyal to and representative of separate parties - employers or job seekers. That means they may have different priorities and opposite interests in the same recruiting transaction.Recruiters find people for jobs.Executive recruiters, often called “headhunters,” stay in business by satisfying the mandate of their corporate client, the employer. They find appropriate prospects to fill an open position. They are not outplacement specialists. They don’t create new jobs or find spots for individuals.Executive recruiters are paid by employers to identify and attract new talent that exactly matches the emplo yer’s specific requirements. Their role is to source the perfect candidate and manage the applicant pool. Thus, executive recruiters guide the recruiting process by limiting a candidate’s access to company insiders with hiring authority.Executive agents find jobs for peopleExecutive agents are consultants who work for the candidate. Similar to the agents used by models, actors and athletes, executive agents are paid by job seekers to find them a job. They can provide services, including personal coaching, mentoring, representation, confiding and scouting to help land you a job. Executive agents can be long-term partners or retained on a short-term basis to advise on a job-search campaign. They can charge clients by the hour or project, but most often take a percentage of your annual compensation as their fee. Like executive recruiters, they typically focus their practice on a particular industry or functional discipline. The difference? It all comes down to who is paying the bill. Executive recruiters put their client first â€" the hiring company. Executive agents put the candidate first; they evaluate situations from the personal perspective of the executive. If you are running a straight-and-narrow job search where you have close ties to prospective companies or industries and are making a linear career move (such as director of marketing to VP of marketing), an executive recruiter will probably work fine. Those most likely to appreciate and value an executive agent are executives who are running more difficult searches where the candidate: Does not have a network, or known contacts are not generating leads Running a high-stakes campaign: search must be confidential, discreet and sophisticated Re-entering the workplace from a sabbatical or early retirement Changing career or industry: needs new, targeted inside contacts Have limited time and restricted availability for networking and researching Has a job-search progress stalled and needs diagnostic to remove barriers Needs sharper focus and consistent execution of the right strategy Seeking a hands-on partner: “Can I hire anyone to job search for me?” If any of the above applies to you, then an executive agent may help your career. Remember to inquire which type of recruiting party someone is. The answer will tell you a lot about what information they are privy to and where their incentives lie.
